WHEREAS, On June 1, 2007, then 14-year old McKay Hatch founded the No Cussing Club at his South Pasadena junior high school after noticing many of his peers were using cusswords and foul language that created an environment of rudeness and disharmony towards others on his campus. McKay reasoned that if pupils could say no to cussing, it would be easier to stay away from drugs, violence, and pornography and turn their focus to positive aspirations and goals. "Leave people better than you found them" became the No Cussing Club' s active motto; and

WHEREAS, Upon founding the No Cussing Club, 50 pupils immediately joined and membership rapidly spread to other schools, communities, states, and countries. By 2009, the No Cussing Challenge had grown to 100 clubs in schools and churches worldwide, with 35,000 online members in 50 states and the countries of Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Israel, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. Its Internet Web site receives thousands of hits per day with hundreds of parents, teens, and children taking the No Cussing Challenge online; and

WHEREAS, While South Pasadena is not the first community to confront a tradition of rude language, for example, in 2009 Saint Charles, a suburb of Saint Louis, Missouri proposed a ban on swearing in bars, and in 2008, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons called for an industry wide ban on racially and sexually charged epithets, the No Cussing Club created a process to help convert foul language to charitable actions that would raise our spirits in times of economic uncertainty and frustration; and

WHEREAS, Cusswords and aggressive language are used by bullies to intimidate their victims. To counter this, the No Cussing Club offers a curriculum for schools workbook that can be downloaded from their Internet Web site and used to assist teachers and pupils to combat bullying and cyber bullying; and

WHEREAS, The No Cussing Challenge encourages members of offices, homes, and schools to place money in a jar with a custom-made label available from their Internet Web site, www.nocussing.com, when foul language is used and donate collected funds to charity. This practice not only helps raise awareness of our wide use of negative language and how it affects our spirits, but inspires redeemable actions that benefit charities and nonprofit social programs; and

WHEREAS, The No Cussing Club has been endorsed by government officials at all levels with some creating cuss-free zones in their jurisdictions. Promoting the notion that words are powerful tools that express how we feel about ourselves and the world we live in, the No Cussing Challenge is a reminder that our ability to uplift, encourage, and motivate others and improve our community starts with the words we use and actions we take; and

WHEREAS, The California Legislature invites the people of this state to take the No Cussing Challenge each year during the first week of March to improve our relationships, to set a tone of harmony and connectedness in our communities, and to inspire ourselves to higher endeavors; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature designate the first week of March of each year as Cuss Free Week; and be it further

Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly prepare copies of this resolution for appropriate distribution to the California congressional delegation and others as appropriate.

The Stranger

A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mum taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger... he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mum would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet.

(I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home - not from us, our friends or any visitors Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger... Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name?.... We just call him 'TV.'

McKay Hatch National Tour: "Stop Bullying In It's Tracks"

Message by No Cussing Club founder McKay Hatch forfeiting his conventional senior year high school graduation for National Crusade:

McKay Hatch here, you may have seen me on Jay Leno or in the news for my no cussing club. I hope you are doing well, unfortunately many teens like me across the country are not. I have been called the "most bullied kid in a America' and I have learned a few things about why kids get bullied and what to do about it! I am dropping everything and going to schools across America to stop bulling dead in its tracks...but I can't do this without you.

There has been a spike in suicides because of bullying and a lot of it is related to the language we use which is why my family and I are dropping everything, even senior year of high school (I will study in the tour bus), to go coast to coast to do something about it!

Too many kids are getting bullied and pushed around for us to just hope things get better so I am going to tour city to city and talk to tens of thousands of kids and parents, but I need your help!

I am working with The Parents Television Council to do a coast-to-coast No Cussing Club Tour, I'll be coming to a town near you to talk about how kids in your community can improve their language and fight bullying!

Ah but for theatrics, the quest for adventure, soul testing, and the infliction of incurable curiosity, would I be compelled to go way out of my comfort zone. “Cover your ears sometimes, your eyes the rest of the time,” was the caution label stamped upon us by a well supportive friend base. My Facebook friends were shocked and amused that I would go to see Rocky Horror http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=121316101247480.

My reputation for high morals, my mind pollution crusade and the new website http://www.cleanupourlanguage.com/ that I started are more extensive than I realized. Even director Christopher Cook gave me a graphic heads up on what to expect in Rocky Horror when I called in for reservations, and he spoke to me personally afterwards.

I was so apprehensive going in that I felt like I was being initiated in some massive orgy. But the respect and the support and encouragement that Cindy and I received from our friends was truly gratifying. I thank you all for this, especially Chris Carlson for checking on us before, throughout, and after the show.

This wasn’t that hard to take at all. I’ve seen much worse vulgarity and graphic sexual content. I’ve been to X rated movies and strip clubs in San Diege and girls dancing on tables in a Tijuana bar. This is theater. The venue was clear. It was graphic transsexual sex, horror, and slapstick comedy. For the nature of the content of the show, and given that this is a midnight show, it was really presented in a qualified and dignified way. The graphicness of the sexual content was not a kind of in your face leudeness for the sake of just being crude. There was only minimal mild profanity in the script. The call outs in the audience were very vulgar but these were highly scripted repetitive verbalisms including a few f-bombs but not an artillery. I have no problem with that in this venue. It is not public nor does it try to establish a norm or a standard of demorality socially.

Theatrically as a performance I must say Rocky Horror was very good; very high entertainment value; the vocals were absolutely superb, all of them. I was in awe. The sound tech was very good, the balance of instrumental and vocal better than most. Energy was high. The musical numbers were absolutely powerful, truly outstanding. The audience was brought into the party at the outset. The welcoming crew really treated the audience very well. Several people including Christopher Cook suggested that we don't admit that we are first timers to the show! They bring you on stage and make you do orgasmic imitations of animals. People were heavily applauded for making animal sounds. They teach the audience a basic dance step to do on cue a couple of times during the show so that everyone in the audience gets to dance in the show. How fun is that? And the only way you can do it wrong is not to do it at all.

The call-outs were perfectly timed funny one-liners relevant to the script by cast members in the audience while actors on stage remained in charactor oblivious to the call outs. Some of the one-liners are play on words having nothing to do with the script. It is fast moving and funny. Fabulous directing made it work well, though perhaps overdone and I think the band might not have been hearing all of the call outs because they came in on top of a few of them but it was easy to understand the words both from the stage and from the call outs in the audience.

No one got rowdy or in any way out of hand. It was a good experience, one that I am proud that I had, the best part being Chris Carlson and the good friends who took me by the hand because it would have taken a lot more than a ten foot pole for me to touch Rocky Horror for its content alone. But the staging, the directing, the acting, choreography, all of those things that make theater magic were exceptional in this enormously popular show.
